Crete is famous for its beaches, archaeological sites, picturesque towns and lively resorts. But there is another Crete beyond the places that most visitors see.

The day begins with pick-up from the main tourist areas of northern Crete, including Sissi, Milatos, Malia, Stalis, Hersonissos and surrounding areas.

As you leave the coast behind, the landscape begins to change.

Hotels and resorts gradually disappear. Mountains, small settlements, olive groves and the countryside of central Crete take their place.

This transition is one of the most interesting parts of the day because it shows just how diverse our island really is.

Crete can completely change within a relatively short distance.

And the further south you travel, the more you begin to discover a different rhythm of life.

Lake Zaros – At the Foot of Psiloritis

One of the first major stops of the day is the beautiful Lake of Zaros.

Situated beneath the slopes of the Psiloritis mountain range, Zaros is surrounded by greenery and mountain scenery and feels completely different from the coastal resorts.

There is time for a short walk, a coffee and an opportunity to enjoy the peaceful surroundings before continuing the journey south.

The wider Psiloritis area is recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark because of its remarkable geological formations, landscape and natural heritage.

But you do not need to know anything about geology to appreciate it.

You simply have to look around.

Across the Great Messara Valley

From Zaros, the journey continues towards the Messara, the largest plain in Crete and one of the most important agricultural and historical regions of the island.

For thousands of years, this fertile land has supported settlements, agriculture and civilisation.

Travelling through the area also brings you close to landscapes connected with different periods of Cretan history, from prehistoric and Minoan times to the Roman era.

But the character of the excursion is about to change again.

The cultivated landscape gradually gives way to mountains and increasingly wild terrain.

This is where the real Jeep Safari begins.

The Off-Road Adventure Through Trypiti Gorge

The vehicles eventually leave the conventional road network behind and enter the spectacular landscape of Trypiti Gorge.

This is the adventurous part of the excursion.

Travelling by 4×4, the route follows the gorge between impressive rock formations and through a landscape of wild olive trees, mountain vegetation and aromatic Cretan herbs.

Wild goats can also be encountered in the surrounding countryside.

There are stops along the route for photographs and to enjoy the scenery, but what makes this section special is the feeling of travelling somewhere genuinely remote.

No busy tourist road.

No lines of coaches.

No crowded resort.

Just mountains, rocks, vegetation and the road towards the Libyan Sea.

And then, after crossing this dramatic landscape, the gorge finally opens towards the south.

Trypiti Beach – Hidden on the South Coast of Crete

At the end of the route lies the reward: Trypiti Beach.

Surrounded by mountains and opening directly onto the Libyan Sea, Trypiti feels very different from the organised beaches found around the major resorts of northern Crete.

Its isolation is an important part of its character.

Trypiti is not the kind of beach where you simply follow the main road and arrive alongside hundreds of other visitors.

Reaching this part of the coast is an adventure in itself.

The difficult terrain means that access is possible either on foot through a demanding journey or with an appropriate 4×4 vehicle and an experienced driver who knows the route and local conditions.

That relative difficulty of access is precisely one of the reasons why Trypiti has managed to preserve its wild character.

Once you arrive, there is time to relax, explore the surroundings and swim in the clear waters of the Libyan Sea.

After travelling through the mountains and descending through the gorge, suddenly standing beside the sea is a fantastic feeling.

And one of the more remote corners of Crete around you.

Traditional Cretan Lunch

Exploring Crete would not be complete without experiencing its food.

During the excursion, a traditional Cretan BBQ lunch is served, accompanied by local wine and water.

It is an opportunity to relax after the off-road journey, enjoy the surroundings and experience another essential part of Cretan culture: sharing good food around the table.

After lunch and a day full of very different landscapes and experiences, the journey back towards the north coast begins.

Why I Personally Recommend the Trypiti Jeep Safari

After many years working in tourism in Crete, I personally believe that Jeep Safari excursions are among the best ways for a visitor to discover the authentic side of our island.

And the Trypiti route is one that I particularly recommend.

The reason is very simple.

It takes you into the heart of Crete.

You are not simply transported from your hotel to another tourist attraction.

During a single day you experience mountains, villages, Zaros, the enormous Messara Valley, the Cretan countryside, an impressive gorge, genuine off-road driving and finally the remote coast of the Libyan Sea.

You have the opportunity to see, taste and experience a side of Crete that many visitors never discover.

And for me, this is what travelling around Crete should also be about.

Of course, everyone should see some of our famous places. Knossos, Spinalonga, Agios Nikolaos, Heraklion, Chania and the other well-known destinations are important parts of the island.

But they are not the whole of Crete.

Some of the experiences that stay with you the longest are found away from the main tourist routes.

There are still mountains, gorges, villages and isolated stretches of coastline where you can feel that you have discovered something rather than simply visited another attraction.

Trypiti is one of those places.

And because reaching it is not straightforward, the journey becomes part of the experience.

You do not have to worry about finding the correct mountain tracks, driving over difficult terrain or navigating unfamiliar roads.

An experienced driver takes care of that while you concentrate on the landscape and the experience around you.

You see extraordinary scenery.

You experience the Cretan countryside.

You taste traditional food.

You swim in the Libyan Sea.

And you return to your hotel having discovered a part of our island that many visitors do not even know exists.

That is why I don’t see the Trypiti Jeep Safari simply as another excursion.

For me, it is an opportunity to experience the authentic Crete.

Small Groups and 4×4 Vehicles

The excursion operates with Land Rover Defender or Mercedes Vito 4×4 vehicles, carrying up to eight passengers.

This smaller format is an important part of the experience.

Instead of travelling with a large coach group, you explore the island in a vehicle capable of reaching areas that conventional tour buses simply cannot access.

The drivers are experienced and provide information during the journey in the passengers’ language.

What Should You Bring?

We recommend comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.

Bring your swimsuit, flip-flops and beach towel for Trypiti Beach, and definitely bring a camera or a good smartphone. There will be plenty of opportunities for photographs throughout the day.

A light jacket can also be useful, particularly depending on the season and weather conditions in the mountains.

Seat belts must be worn inside the vehicles, and eating, drinking and smoking inside the vehicles are not permitted.

Is the Trypiti Jeep Safari Right for You?

If you simply want to spend another day beside the hotel swimming pool, probably not.

But if you want to leave the resort behind for a day and discover what lies beyond the usual tourist routes, then this is an excursion worth considering.

It is particularly suitable for visitors who enjoy nature, photography, mountain scenery, small-group experiences and discovering places that would otherwise be difficult to reach independently.

It is also an excellent choice if you have already visited some of Crete’s famous attractions and now want to see something completely different.
