Elounda, Crete: Discover One of the Most Beautiful Coastal Destinations in Greece
30/06/2026Filotimo: The Greek Value That Cannot Be Translated
30/06/2026Among all the places you can visit in Crete, few leave such a lasting impression as Spinalonga Island. Located at the entrance of the beautiful Gulf of Elounda in Eastern Crete, Spinalonga is one of Greece’s most important historical monuments and one of the most fascinating excursions available to visitors exploring the island.
Known internationally as the “Island of Tears,” Spinalonga’s history spans centuries. The impressive Venetian fortress, constructed in the late 16th century, was designed to protect one of the Mediterranean’s most strategic natural harbours. Later, during the Ottoman period and, most famously, between 1903 and 1957, the island became home to Greece’s leper colony, where hundreds of men, women and children lived, suffered, hoped and ultimately demonstrated extraordinary human dignity.
Today, a visit to Spinalonga offers far more than a typical sightseeing experience. Walking through its narrow streets, exploring the remains of homes, shops, churches and hospitals, visitors can gain a profound understanding of the human stories that unfolded within these stone walls. The island stands today not only as a historical monument, but also as a powerful symbol of resilience, faith and hope.
The breathtaking natural beauty surrounding Spinalonga makes the experience even more memorable. The crystal-clear waters of Mirabello Bay, the picturesque village of Elounda and the charming town of Agios Nikolaos combine to create one of the most rewarding day trips in Crete.
For me personally, Spinalonga has always been much more than a tourist attraction. Growing up in Eastern Crete, I was fortunate to hear stories about the island from older generations who experienced its history firsthand. My own family has deep roots connected to the wider region, and from an early age I developed a profound respect for the people who lived and worked around Spinalonga. These experiences later inspired my academic interest in tourism and heritage interpretation, including my postgraduate studies focusing on destination management and dark tourism.
Through my work at Stefanos Tours, I have had the privilege of introducing thousands of visitors from around the world to the remarkable history of Spinalonga. My philosophy has always been that visitors deserve more than transportation and tickets; they deserve context, understanding and the opportunity to connect emotionally with the places they visit.
At Stefanos Tours, we carefully select excursions that allow our guests to experience not only the history of Spinalonga, but also the culture, landscapes and authentic atmosphere of Eastern Crete. Whether this is your first visit to Crete or your tenth, Spinalonga remains a destination that touches every visitor in a unique and unforgettable way.
A journey to Spinalonga is not simply an excursion. It is a journey into the history of Crete, into the strength of the human spirit, and into memories that will stay with you long after your holiday has ended.
