Potamos Beach – My Top Recommendation Near Sissi
If I had to recommend just one beach to visitors staying in Sissi, my answer would almost always be Potamos Beach.
Located just 7 kilometres west of Sissi, near the town of Malia, Potamos Beach combines everything most visitors are looking for during a holiday in Crete: soft golden sand, crystal-clear water, a gentle entrance into the sea and excellent facilities.
Unlike several of the smaller beaches around Sissi, Potamos is particularly suitable for families with children. The sandy seabed and shallow water allow children to play safely while adults can enjoy a relaxing swim in one of the most beautiful organised beaches on Crete’s north coast.
The beach is fully organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and a beach bar, making it easy to spend the entire day here. Free parking is available nearby, and directly opposite the beach you’ll find a traditional Cretan taverna serving excellent local food.
One of Potamos Beach’s greatest advantages is its location. Just a few minutes away lies the Minoan Palace of Malia, one of the six Minoan Palatial Centres recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many visitors combine a morning visit to the archaeological site with an afternoon swim at Potamos, creating one of the most enjoyable day trips from Sissi.

Located approximately 23 kilometres east of Sissi, near the village of Istro, Voulisma Beach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. Its soft golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters create a breathtaking landscape that often reminds visitors of tropical destinations.
On calm summer days, the sea displays incredible shades of turquoise, emerald and deep blue, making Voulisma one of the island’s most photographed beaches. The shallow, clear water is perfect for swimming, while the organised facilities allow visitors to spend an entire day in complete comfort.
Sunbeds, umbrellas, cafés and free parking are all available nearby, making Voulisma an excellent choice for couples, families and first-time visitors to Crete.
Because of its outstanding beauty, Voulisma has become extremely popular. During July and August, especially between late morning and mid-afternoon, the beach can become quite busy. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere and want to enjoy the beach at its very best, I strongly recommend arriving before 10:00 am.
Even during the busiest weeks of summer, however, Voulisma remains one of those places that every visitor should experience at least once.

Located just 13 kilometres west of Sissi, Stalida Beach is one of the finest sandy beaches on Crete’s north coast. Its long stretch of soft golden sand, shallow crystal-clear water and relaxed atmosphere make it a favourite destination for families, couples and visitors of all ages.
Unlike many smaller beaches, Stalida offers plenty of space to spread out and enjoy a full day by the sea. The gentle slope into the water makes swimming comfortable for both children and less confident swimmers, while the calm conditions found on most summer days create an ideal environment for relaxation.
The beach is fully organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, cafés and traditional tavernas stretching along the promenade. Everything you need is within easy walking distance, making Stalida one of the most convenient beaches near Sissi.
One of the things I particularly like about Stalida is its balance. Although it is a popular tourist destination, it generally feels more relaxed than neighbouring Malia. You can enjoy a peaceful swim, take a leisurely walk along the shoreline or finish the day with dinner overlooking the sea.
If your idea of the perfect beach includes fine sand, easy access and all the comforts you could need, Stalida is an excellent choice.

Located just 8 kilometres west of Sissi, Malia Beach is one of the largest and most popular beaches on Crete’s northern coastline. With its long stretch of golden sand, shallow turquoise waters and excellent facilities, it has been attracting visitors from all over Europe for decades.
The beach is fully organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, water sports and a wide variety of cafés and restaurants nearby. Whether you’re looking to relax under the sun, enjoy water activities or spend the entire day by the sea, Malia Beach offers everything you could need.
One thing every visitor should know, however, is that Malia is an extremely popular destination, especially during July and August. During the peak holiday season, the beach can become very busy, particularly around midday and in the afternoon.
For some visitors, this lively atmosphere is part of the experience. For others looking for a quieter and more peaceful beach day, nearby alternatives such as Potamos Beach or Stalida Beach may be a better choice.
Despite its popularity, there is no denying that Malia Beach remains one of the finest sandy beaches near Sissi and an excellent option for visitors who enjoy organised beaches with plenty of facilities and a vibrant holiday atmosphere.

Boufos Beach – Sissi’s Iconic Beach
Located within walking distance of the centre of Sissi, Boufos Beach is one of the village’s most recognisable landmarks. Surrounded by rocky cliffs and overlooking the open Cretan Sea, it offers beautiful scenery and some of the most spectacular sunsets in the area.
Although Boufos is a lovely place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Sissi, I always like to give visitors honest advice before they visit.
Unlike the long sandy beaches of Potamos or Stalida, the entrance into the sea is rocky, with underwater stones that can make getting in and out of the water less comfortable. For this reason, I strongly recommend wearing water shoes, especially for children or anyone who prefers a more comfortable entry into the sea.
The crystal-clear water makes Boufos an excellent spot for swimming and snorkelling, while its location just a few minutes from the harbour means it’s an easy choice if you don’t want to drive anywhere.
One of my favourite times to visit Boufos is in the evening. As the sun begins to set over the Cretan Sea, the entire coastline is bathed in warm golden light, creating one of the most beautiful sunsets in Sissi.

Avlaki Beach – A Peaceful Cove Loved by Locals
Just a short walk from Boufos lies Avlaki Beach, a small and peaceful cove that many visitors overlook during their stay in Sissi.
The beach is surrounded by rocky coastline and offers exceptionally clear water, making it an excellent place for a quiet swim or snorkelling. Compared to some of the larger organised beaches nearby, Avlaki has a much more relaxed atmosphere and is often appreciated by those looking to escape the crowds.
As with Boufos Beach, it’s important to know that the entrance into the sea is rocky. Water shoes are highly recommended, especially if you’re visiting with children or prefer easier access to the water.
Avlaki is also the starting point for one of Sissi’s hidden treasures. From here, a rocky coastal path leads to the beautiful beach below the Kalimera Kriti Resort—a place that many visitors never discover.

Agia Varvara Beach – A Peaceful Escape Close to Sissi
Just a few minutes from the centre of Sissi lies Agia Varvara Beach, a small and peaceful beach that many visitors overlook. If you’re looking for a quiet place to swim away from the larger organised beaches, this hidden corner of the coastline is well worth considering.
The beach offers beautiful clear water and a relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for visitors who simply want to enjoy the sea without the crowds. Unlike the busier beaches nearby, Agia Varvara remains relatively quiet even during the peak summer season.
Before visiting, it’s important to know that the entrance into the sea is rocky. While the water itself is beautifully clear, the rocks can make entering and leaving the sea a little more challenging. For this reason, I recommend wearing water shoes, which make swimming much more comfortable.
Although Agia Varvara doesn’t offer the extensive facilities found at larger organised beaches, its peaceful setting and natural beauty make it one of the hidden treasures of the Sissi coastline.

Kalimera Beach – Sissi’s Best-Kept Secret
Hidden below the Kalimera Kriti Resort, this beautiful beach remains one of Sissi’s least-known treasures. Many visitors spend their entire holiday in the village without ever discovering it.
Reaching the beach is part of the experience.
The easiest access begins at Avlaki Beach, where a rocky coastal footpath follows the shoreline for approximately five minutes. The path is uneven in places and requires a little care, but it is not difficult for most visitors with suitable footwear.
In my opinion, the short walk is rewarded many times over.
As you arrive, you’ll be greeted by crystal-clear turquoise water, a peaceful atmosphere and a beautiful natural setting that feels completely different from the larger organised beaches nearby. Even during the busiest weeks of summer, Kalimera Beach often feels surprisingly calm.
Although the beach lies below the Kalimera Kriti Resort, it is accessible to all visitors. Many people mistakenly believe it is reserved exclusively for hotel guests, but like beaches throughout Greece, it can be enjoyed by everyone.
If you’re looking to discover one of Sissi’s hidden gems, this is a beach I highly recommend.

Kolokytha Beach – A Hidden Paradise Worth the Journey
Located on the beautiful Spinalonga Peninsula, approximately 28 kilometres from Sissi, Kolokytha Beach is one of the most breathtaking natural beaches in Eastern Crete.
Unlike many organised beaches, Kolokytha remains largely untouched. The combination of turquoise water, unspoilt surroundings and spectacular scenery creates an atmosphere that feels far removed from the busy tourist resorts.
Reaching the beach, however, requires a little planning.
The final section of the route follows an unpaved dirt road. Although many visitors drive there every day without any difficulty, it is important to drive slowly and carefully.
If you are travelling with a rental car, I strongly recommend checking your insurance policy before setting off. Many rental companies do not cover damage that occurs on unpaved or off-road roads, even if the damage is accidental.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit Kolokytha.
Quite the opposite.
It simply means you should be aware of the conditions before you go.
Once you arrive, you’ll discover why so many locals consider Kolokytha one of the most beautiful beaches in Eastern Crete.
The calm turquoise water is perfect for swimming, while the peaceful surroundings make it an ideal escape for visitors looking to experience Crete’s natural beauty away from the crowds.

Plaka Beach – Crystal-Clear Water and Spectacular Views of Spinalonga
Located around 25 kilometres from Sissi, the seaside village of Plaka offers one of the most relaxing swimming experiences in Eastern Crete. While it doesn’t have the soft sand found at Potamos or Stalida, it more than compensates with exceptionally clear water, breathtaking scenery and a peaceful atmosphere.
Instead of sand, Plaka Beach is covered with large smooth pebbles. Although this may not appeal to everyone, many visitors actually prefer it, as the pebbles help keep the water remarkably clean and crystal clear.
Swimming here is a real pleasure. The sea is incredibly transparent, making it an excellent choice for snorkelling and for anyone who enjoys calm, refreshing water. Looking across the bay, you’ll also enjoy magnificent views of the historic island of Spinalonga, creating one of the most picturesque settings anywhere on Crete’s north-east coast.
The waterfront of Plaka is lined with excellent traditional tavernas, cafés and small shops, making it easy to combine a swim with a leisurely lunch overlooking the sea.
If you’re planning to visit Spinalonga or Elounda, stopping for a swim in Plaka is something I highly recommend.

Located just outside Agios Nikolaos, approximately 27 kilometres from Sissi, Almyros Beach is one of the best organised beaches in Eastern Crete and a favourite among both locals and visitors.
Its wide sandy shoreline, shallow crystal-clear waters and excellent facilities make it an ideal destination for families with young children, couples and anyone looking for a comfortable and relaxing beach day.
One of Almyros Beach’s most distinctive features is the small freshwater river that flows into the sea. During the hottest days of summer, the cool freshwater creates a refreshing contrast to the warm Mediterranean, offering a unique swimming experience found in very few places on the island.
The beach is fully organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, cafés and nearby restaurants, while parking is easy and convenient. Lifeguards are usually present during the summer season, adding another level of comfort for families.
If you’re planning to spend a day exploring Agios Nikolaos, I highly recommend combining your visit with a swim at Almyros Beach. It offers the perfect balance of natural beauty, excellent facilities and easy access.
