Leaving early in the morning and driving along the northern coastline, we stop for a short breakfast outside Rethymnon, before continuing on to Chania and the Plain of Omalos, 1300 meters above sea level. Here we begin our descent into the gorge from Xyloskalo (800 meters) down to the floor of the gorge. It is one of the longest in Europe (18 km -12 miles) with a width from 2-40 meters, and a depth of 250-600 meters. It takes 6 -7 hours to walk through and it is essential for you to have the correct footwear as it is rocky in some places. At the end of this long walk you reach the mouth of the gorge, on the shores of the Libyan Sea, at the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli. You can enjoy a well-earned meal in one of the local taverns or enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear blue waters. From there you are transported by boat to Chora Sfakion, where we meet our coach for the return journey.
