What to Expect
Departing early in the morning from Sissi, we head west across the island. Our first stop is in Skaleta, near Rethymno, for a quick breakfast and restroom break.
We then reach the Omalos Plateau in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), where our hike begins at Xyloskalo, the entrance of Samaria Gorge.
From here, we begin the 18 km downhill trek, following the ancient path of the Taras River. The hiking duration is approximately 6–7 hours, depending on your pace and fitness level.
Highlights of the Samaria Hike
- Start at 1,200m altitude, descending through towering cliffs and pine forests
- Spot the famous Kri-Kri wild goats, and discover caves once used as wartime shelters
- Pass through the abandoned village of Santa Maria, nestled in the heart of the gorge
- Reach the breathtaking Iron Gates (Sideroportes) – the narrowest point of the gorge (just 3 meters wide and 300 meters high)
- End at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where you can swim, eat, and relax after your trek
- Board a scenic boat ride to Sfakia, where our coach awaits to return you to Sissi

- 05:15–07:00 – Pick-up from Sissi & nearby hotels
- 07:15 – Stop in Skaleta (breakfast/WC)
- 10:00 – Arrival at Omalos Plateau – hike preparation
- 10:30 – Entrance to Samaria Gorge at Xyloskalo
- 17:45 – Boat departs Agia Roumeli → Sfakia
- 18:45 – Coach transfer from Sfakia
- 20:30 – Stop in Skaleta (short break)
- 21:30–23:30 – Return to hotels
